Nutrition
for Cancer Patients
Loss of appetite can be a
problem for cancer patients. People may not feel hungry when
they are uncomfortable or tired. Also, some of the common side
effects of cancer treatment, such as nausea, vomiting, and
mouth sores, can make it hard to eat. The doctor can prescribe
medicine to help with these problems. Good nutrition is
important. Patients who eat well often feel better and have
more energy. Eating well means getting enough calories and
protein to help prevent weight loss, regain strength, and
rebuild normal tissues.
Doctors, nurses, and
dietitians can explain the side effects of treatment and can
suggest ways to deal with them. Patients and their families
also may want to read the National Cancer Institute booklet Eating
Hints for Cancer Patients, which contains many useful
suggestions.
