Herbal Remedy Assists
Prostate Cancer

A Chinese herbal remedy has proven to have a positive impact in the fight
against prostate cancer. The herb, sold in health food shops under the name
PC-SPES, significantly reduces the levels of prostate specific antigen (PSA),
a protein in the blood linked to cancer. There are two forms of prostate
cancer: hormone dependent disease, fuelled by testosterone, only improves
when testosterone is removed; hormone independent disease continues to
develop despite low levels of testosterone. The research conducted at the
University of California studied 70 men with advanced prostate cancer.
Patients with the hormone dependent disease taking PC-SPES saw a rapid
reduction in their PSA levels by 80 per cent. All the men in the study
experienced a vast decrease in their levels of testosterone and almost half
of the patients suffering from hormone independent disease also had lower
levels of PSA. Dr Eric Hall, head of the research programme, said: "It
clearly offers a clinical benefit. It also provides us with another
treatment before chemotherapy
